Kandinsky Inspired Drawings

First graders viewed and discussed the work of Wassily Kandinsky. Using line, shape, and color students created mixed media pantings inspired by Kandinsky.

First students used a wet on wet watercolor technique to create the background. We tried to limit our palettes to 3 or 4 colors.

Next students used lines and shapes to create Kandinsky inspired drawings. We focused on trying to overlap shapes to make it more interesting. Students then traced their designs with sharpies.

Finally students used crayons to add color to some of the shapes. Some shapes were left with the background showing through. Construction paper crayons work great for dark backgrounds!
